Novoto successfully executed three automated optical inspection machine orders from Zebra Imaging.
Novoto provided mechanical design service on three automated optical inspection (AOI) equipment to inspect optical lenses, LCD's, and the word's first 3D dynamic holographic displays. Novoto worked with Zebra Imaging's technical staff to develop the custom machines from scratch. It involved high precision motion control, illumination, optics, vibration/thermal analyses, BOM, assist purchasing, manufacturing, and testing.
The in-house manufacturing machines improved the old way (human) of inspecting parts drastically. Utilizing machine vision algorithms, the AOI machines cut the inspection time drastically and improved the reliability/repeatability drastically.
One machine involved determining the location of patterned layer with an accuracy of 1-2 microns and had to be very repeatable. It required thermal and mechanical stability. Novoto picked a state of the art piezoelectric stage with closed loop control. With no moving parts to fail, it provided high reliability and accuracy. Piezo stages can provide accuracy orders of magnitude higher. The motion range is limited, but the life is almost infinite, assuming it's supported/mounted properly.
